General Instructions:
Bait stations are mandatory for outdoor, above-ground use. Tamper-resistant bait stations must be used wherever children, pets, non-target mammals, or birds may have access to the bait placement location.
SELECTION OF TREATMENT AREAS:
Determine areas where rats, mice, or meadow voles* will most likely find and consume the bait. Generally, these areas are along walls, by gnawed openings, in corners and concealed places, between floors and walls, or in locations where rats, mice, or meadow voles*, or their signs have been seen. Protect bait from rain and snow. Remove as much alternative food as possible.
Directions For Use:
RATS:
Place 1 to 6 blocks (at intervals of 15 to 30 feet) per placement in infested areas. Maintain an uninterrupted supply of fresh bait for at least 10 days or until signs of rat activity cease.
MICE AND MEADOW VOLES:
Place 1 block per placement. Space placements at 8- to 12-foot intervals in infested areas. Two blocks may be needed at points of very high activity. Maintain an uninterrupted supply of
fresh bait for at least 15 days or until signs of mouse or meadow vole* activity cease.
SEWERS:
For use in sewers, thread wire through block and securely attach to a stationary structure such as the bottom step of a manhole ladder or a sewer grate. Allow just enough wire for the block to rest on manhole benching. If benching is not present, suspend block a few inches above the high-water mark or secure block on a board supported by opposing steps of the ladder. Securing block in this manner may inhibit removal by rats or water. Use at least 15 Blocks per manhole. Maintain an uninterrupted supply of fresh bait for at least 10 days or until there no longer are fresh signs of rat activity.
FOLLOW-UP:
Replace contaminated or spoiled bait immediately. Wearing gloves, collect and dispose of all dead, exposed animals and leftover bait. To prevent reinfestation, limit sources of rodent food, water, and harborage as much as possible. If reinfestation does occur, repeat treatment. Where a continuous source of infestation is present, establish permanent bait stations and replenish as needed.
How Does Contrac California Soft Bait Work?
Contrac California contains bromethalin, an acute rodenticide that disrupts energy production within the nervous system. Unlike anticoagulant rodenticides that interfere with blood clotting, bromethalin affects cellular energy metabolism, ultimately damaging nervous system function.
Because of this different mode of action, Contrac California Soft Bait can be a useful alternative in rodent management programs where anticoagulant resistance or restrictions are concerns. Although rodents may consume a lethal amount during one feeding period, Contrac California is not an instant-kill bait. Bell Laboratories states that death may occur two or more days after consumption.
What Rodents Does Contrac California Soft Bait Control?
The principal target rodents promoted by Bell Laboratories are:
-
Norway Rats: Common ground-dwelling rats frequently found around foundations, burrows and structures.
-
Roof Rats: Climbing rats commonly associated with elevated structural areas and rooflines.
-
House Mice: Small rodents that readily enter residential and commercial buildings.
The EPA registration also identifies certain additional rodent species; applications must follow the specific label directions for the target species.
Contrac California vs. Regular Contrac Soft Bait
One of the most important differences between these products is their active ingredients.
| Feature | Contrac California Soft Bait | Regular Contrac Soft Bait |
|---|---|---|
| Active Ingredient | Bromethalin | Bromadiolone |
| Rodenticide Type | Non-anticoagulant | Second-generation anticoagulant |
| Mode of Action | Disrupts nervous system energy metabolism | Interferes with blood clotting |
| Formulation | Oil-Based Soft Bait | Oil-Based Soft Bait |
| Primary Targets | Rats and Mice | Rats and Mice |
| California-Specific Formulation | Yes | No |
| Individual Sachet Weight | 8 g | 10 g |
Important: Contrac California Soft Bait is not simply regular Contrac with different packaging. It uses a different active ingredient and mode of action.
Why California Pest Control Professionals Choose Bromethalin Bait
California has imposed restrictions on certain anticoagulant rodenticides to reduce risks to wildlife and other non-target animals. Contrac California Soft Bait offers a non-anticoagulant alternative for appropriate structural rodent control applications. However, non-anticoagulant does not mean non-toxic to wildlife or pets. Bromethalin can cause serious poisoning following direct ingestion, and poisoned rodents may also present risks to predators or scavengers. Proper bait-station use, placement, monitoring and prompt carcass removal remain essential.
California registration does not eliminate any applicable licensing, use-site, bait-station or other legal requirements.
Where Can Contrac California Soft Bait Be Used?
